Engagements/ Patent valuation

Every engagement starts with the business, not the patent. We size the market, test the commercial thesis, and then ask what the IP is worth to the people who would actually pay for it: acquirers, lenders, licensees, and investors

Portfolio valuation to support major debt facility

A next-gen aircraft designer/manufacturer needed a realistic valuation with real commercial insight

The situation. The client wanted to exit and was weighing larger incumbents against startups as buyers, along with licensing the significant patent portfolio. The technology and patents were strong, but with no sales or marketing team to scale revenue, P&L growth was limited. The task was how to show potential acquirers the value that lay beyond the earnings.

What we found. The company had built the most robust patent portfolio in both current and emerging technology spaces, , notably with AI and ML-related claims dating back more than a decade. As the field shifts toward machine learning and large datasets, the portfolio covers an estimated 50%+ of the emerging methods, which puts many market players at infringement risk. Medtech M&A activity was near all-time highs.

The result. An evidence-based case for the incremental value of the IP. The company exited at 1.8x the industry revenue multiple and 3.1x the industry EBITDA multiple.

The situation. A next-generation aircraft developer needed a conservative valuation to support a potential debt facility. A lender doesn't underwrite the best case. It needs a floor it can defend.

What we found. The portfolio was broad and deep, comprising 95 patents covering the aircraft design, manufacturing process and its modular and propulsion systems. Several major aerospace players hold patents in adjacent technology.

The commercial insight was less obvious: the government (U.S. DoD) had committed substantial grant funding, which signaled a real vested interest in seeing this technology reach its aircraft. A strategic buyer with that stake was a credible basis for a conservative floor.

The result. A defensible low-case valuation, built only on the strategic value to one program and excluding the much larger commercial and freight opportunities. It contributed to a debt facility of tens of millions of dollars, and the company subsequently raised a nine-figure Series B.
